“MY BROTHER’S HAND”
In a relationship between a young and old brother there are many things in common and many things that are different. Each one of them have different responsibilities like one of the oldest brother is to take care of the young one, in the story “Sweet Potato Pie” charley the oldest brother is trying to make his brother Buddy somebody, and he does makes him somebody not just a farmer. It is because of Charley that Buddy is a success. In the story “Sweet Potato Pie” like in the middle when Buddy is saying all these things that had happened before he says. “My mind spins off the years, and I am back to this afternoon and today’s Charley-still long and lean, still gentled eyes, still my greatest fan and still determined to keep me on the ball”, in this quote he is saying that he remembers the past years and how Charley was Physically and that Charley wanted him to be somebody not just a farmer and also earlier in the story Charley said “ As I grew older, Charley became more than a father than a brother” he says this while he is a kid, and he means that he respects Charley and that Charley takes well care of him and I think Buddy is grateful about that because he does wants to be somebody and he is helping Charley to help him. By the end of the story when buddy is at Charley’s house in Harlem, they were arguing about a boy that Charley had seen and talked to about Buddy but Charley didn’t told the kid that he was Buddy’s brother because he didn’t want people to know that Buddy’s brother, Charley was a cab driver, and Buddy said, “ You’re a nut, you should’ve told that kid the truth, I wanted to say I’m proud of you, you’ve got more on the ball than most people I know I wouldn’t have been anything at all except for you” By this Buddy says that he wanted to say that he is proud of Charley even though he doesn’t shows it and that tanks to Charley Buddy is somebody. Then in the end of the story Bea had fixed some potato pie to Buddy and when Charley was driving him to the hotel Charley said that he couldn’t go in the hotel with a brown paper bag and they started arguing again but in the end Buddy gave the bag to him and he says, “foolish as it seems to me, it was important to him” so he says that it wasn’t okay to argue with Charley and he had to respect him because if it wasn’t for him Buddy would be a farmer or something like that and that’s why he gave the brown paper bag to Cahrley. Tanks to Charley, Buddy is somebody and Buddy is grateful for all that Charley did for him. If it wasn’t for Charley , Buddy could have been a farmer or something like that, but he wanted Buddy to break the chain or poverty of their family and he help him, so it is important between family to help each other if someone has a dream or wants to do something to support him and be with them until the end.
